For most dogs barking is part of their natural behavior, their method of communication with each other and their human parents, but occasionally their barking can be something that’s out of control. Don’t have any illusions about getting your dog to completely stop barking; if you want that, perhaps another pet might be better for you than a dog. If you are equipped to handle a moderate bit of barking, and just wish to halt excessive barking, you will find many methods available to assist you.
Excessive barking is when the barking occurs without stopping for a half an hour or longer. You will get tired of this kind of barking in no time at all, as will your family members and your neighbors. Many factors can cause excessive barking such as lack of attention, feeling lonely, being bored, or when something sparks the dog’s interest like another animal or unknown person.
In order to keep your dog from problem barking, you must first figure out what they’re barking about or what’s causing it. If your dog is outside most of the time that he’s barking, it could be a sense of loneliness or just total boredom for him. A lot of folks have the idea dogs should be outside pets and they’ll be happier out there than inside, but dogs are also pack animals. They want company as badly as we do, and they’ll start getting lonely if you leave them outside for too long alone; they’ll start barking to get your attention.
If your dog is barking out of loneliness you should start including him in family activities more often. You could even bring him in the house a bit more often so he’ll have companionship. If you are unable to do this, you should try going outside with him more often so he can play with you and get the attention he needs. He will quickly figure out that your arrival home means you’re coming out to play and spend time with him, and his continuous barking will stop since he’s just trying to get you to come outside.
Barking because of boredom can also be cured easily. Dog will bark when bored to get anybody to come be with them, and it doesn’t matter if they’re inside or outside the house. You can try out a few strategies to stop the problem barking, especially if it gets so bad that your neighbors complain about the barking. If you can get some dog toys that will occupy your dog’s time for awhile, especially stuffed with treats, that’ll work great. Having ambient noise like the radio or television will let your dog feel like they are not alone. If you can crate train your dog, you can have an appropriate punishment to use if your dog gets out of line, which can be effective.
If the problem is alert barking, you need to do a thorough evaluation of circumstances before you can figure out what needs to be done. After all, you might want your dog to keep the alert barking instinct, and you don’t want it to be trained out of them. But, if you absolutely do not want your dog to bark at strangers or other animals even to warn you of danger, you must train your dog to stop his barking by using verbal commands. Your other choice would be to train him that a couple barks to let you know it’s an alert would be acceptable, but once you have acknowledged his alert he is to be quiet.
