As you get ready to leave your house, you may notice your dog showing signs of anxiety. Dogs are smart. Your dog has figured out you are leaving by how you behave before you leave. If your dog knows you are going to leave when you put on your coat, you simply put on your coat often. Put on your jacket, get your keys, and go to the door throughout the day. When you get there, turn around and go back to what you were doing. What you are doing is removing your dogs association with you leaving to the you putting on your coat. It takes some energy, but it’s necessary to put in the effort. Once you have done a multiple repetitions of desensitization drills, your dog will be relaxed and content when you are gone.
Canine separation anxiety doesn’t go away by itself and can develop into a huge problem. In fact, it often gets much worse.
